Approximately 350 children under the age of five die every year in a swimming pool. After her son almost drowned in his grandparents' swimming pool, actress Tracey Gold became determined to make sure parents know how to safeguard their pools.
Remember: These devices are not a substitute for adult supervision.
Make Your Pool Safe
Surround your pool with a fence that is at least five feet tall so your child can't climb or fit through the bars.
The gate on the fence should be self-closing and latch automatically.
Install a gate alarm so you know when the gate is opened. Make sure its high enough so only adults can turn it off.
Add a water alarm that sounds whenever water is displaced.
Install another alarm on the door that leads to your pool area.
Don't leave pool toys in the water—they can be tempting to a child, and if they do fall in the pool, the toys would block your visibility.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), a motorized safety cover should be used when the pool is not in use.
Most importantly, everyone in your family should know CPR.
Inside Your Home
Over a three-year period, the CPSC reported that 58 children under the age of five drowned in five-gallon buckets inside their home. Never leave a bucket of water unattended.
Consider using a toilet clip to keep the toilet lid closed.
