It's summer and getting warm outside—that means you need to be aware of the dangers of open and unguarded windows. Each year in the United States, 4,700 children aged ten and under fall from windows; many of these falls result in hospitalization or death.
After their seven-year-old son Timmy fell just 11 feet from a window and died from head injuries, Kim and Steve Healey knew they had to raise awareness.
Kim shares simple safety measures you can take in your own home.
Teach your children not to play near open or unguarded windows, not to lean on window screens, and not to lean out of windows—ever!
Open your windows from the top, not the bottom, to provide ventilation. If you do open windows from the bottom, only open them four inches or less. Special locks are available that only allow the window to be opened to a certain height.
Window screens give a false sense of security and are not meant to prevent a child from a fall. A screen is not strong enough to withstand a child's weight.
Never place furniture that a child can climb onto in front of an unguarded window.
If you install window guards, make sure they are made of strong metal, installed correctly, and make sure the window frame you are securing is not rotted or loose. It's important that adults are able to easily open these guards in case of fire.
Consider planting soft shrubbery or grass under windows to cushion potential falls. The landing surface can greatly affect the degree of injury sustained.
